The watch was invented sometime in the late 14th century. The first gents watches were made to be carried in a pocket. These pocket watches were often secured to a lapel by a chain or fob. Over time, the watch was reduced in size and eventually was made small enough to be worn on the wrist. Manufacturers started producing ‘wristlets’, which were specifically made to be worn by women, but men at the time wanted nothing to do with wearing a wristwatch.

Pocket watches were large, awkward and too easy to lose during battle, so the soldiers had to improvise. A cuff was fitted around the wrist of a soldier and then the pocket watch was affixed into the cuff. Wrist watches were still not commonly seen on men though, even after their acclaimed use during war. After examining the success the British had with using wrist watches during war, other countries followed suit.

Wrist watches have come a long way over the years. By the nineteen forties, wrist watches not only showed the time, but also the date. Now, when you go watch shopping, you can find models with Internet access, MP3 players and cameras installed. Who knows where the watch makers of the future will take us with wrist watch technology?

Now that you know a little history on gents watches, let us talk about where to buy them. Jewelry stores will have a variety available. Of course, online shopping will give you the ultimate choice in every aspect of the men’s watch. Gents watches are available with many different band and faces. The typical band or strap choices include leather, silver, gold, stainless steel, rubber, nylon and reptile skin such as crocodile, lizard and snake. Faces can be plain or colored. For something on the more formal side, consider purchasing a diamond studded watch. There are so many choices today for gents watches that is seems hard to choose the right one!
